To All Gardeners!!
This weekend while you are digging in your gardens and dividing perennials for full sun, please think of our school garden. We are needing more flowers, and our student garden club members will be happy to plant. If you have any left over bags of potting soil, please send this too.
Also needed are the small plastic rectangle Gerber baby food containers.
Hummingbirds will be returning to our garden around April 25!

The Art Show certainly demonstrates that Old Bonhomme is an especially creative place! The work of Mrs. Roth with our young artists is exceptional and we are lucky to have someone who believes in self-expression through the arts. Our school climate lives and breathes creative expression through the art created in our studio!
Student pick up & Drop-off
Parents, please be considerate and obey the signs out front which state “BUS ONLY ZONE 8:15-9:00 and 3:00-4:00.” This is for our students safety and we appreciate your cooperation. As a reminder, students can only be picked up after school on the upper blacktop. Parents may not wait out front by the buses for their child. The children know the rules and read the signs too so think of the example you are setting when you disregard the posted signs.
Thank You from Mrs. Roth
A special thank you to Mrs. Brown for creating all the QR codes for our students. The QR codes make the art show interactive and help viewers understand what the artist intended when they created their masterpiece. Every artist has one QR code! That's over 374 codes created, gadzooks, that's a lot!!!
Additional thanks goes out to Cathy Moore and Corey Miller for the countless hours of organizing portfolios, sorting, matting, labeling and even hanging artwork! The show could not have happened without your support, thank you, Ladies!

Weather Man

MP3 noticed the weather in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch newspaper was in color some days and in black and white other days. They took data on this for nine weeks and sent their results to the editor. They asked how the newspaper decided when to use color. The editor wrote back with an explanation and included Weather Bird puppets, tattoos, and coloring sheets. The best part was an original painting of the Weather Bird made especially for our class!

Afternoon Car Pool Reminders
Our focus needs to be on student safety and efficiently moving students to cars so remember...
A. Parents need to wait away from the doors, beyond the school canopy on the Old Bonhomme Road side of the sidewalk, for their child to exit the building. We have installed a yellow safety chain as a reminder.
B. After meeting your child, move back beyond the yellow chain so the supervisors can clearly identify students still waiting to be picked up.
C. The playground is chained off from community use until all students are dismissed.

D. Each grade level has an assigned and clearly designated waiting area that is supervised by a grade level teacher.

Real Talk about Bullying:

How to Help Your Child if he/she is a Target/a Bully/or a Bystander

MICDS and Whitfield School have teamed together to bring award winning-speaker Jim Bisenius for an exciting and informational program titled Real Talk about Bullying: How to Help Your Child if He/She is a Target, a Bully, or a Bystander. In this program, parents will learn how to teach their child to respond to verbal bullying, physical bullying, social bullying, and group manipulations. Parents will walk away with knowledge of the various roles of bullying as well as tools they can immediately implement and help their child master in order to eliminate bullying from his or her life. Participants will learn specifically how “popular” bullies isolate, control and manipulate their peers. They will learn exactly what steps their son or daughter must take to stop them. In addition, parents will be able to use all of these techniques in their own life to deal with controlling or intimidating adults. Please join us on April 23, 2014 from 6:30-8:30 on the campus of MICDS. Program will be held in the Mary Eliot Chapel and is open to all parents (JK-12).

OB's Got Character
It's official! Our Eagle Mascot, generously purchased for Old Bonhomme by our OBPTO, has a name! All students had the opportunity to vote on one of three name choices this week, during their computer lab time. The name choices were OBI (pronounced like OBI-Wan Kenobi), SOAR-RO (pronounced like ZORRO) and SWOOP. The Eagle Mascot made a special appearance during Friday's Success Week Assembly, and was introduced by his OFFICIAL NEW NAME: OBI :) The students all

cheered when the name was announced! OBI is excited to make its next appearance! Please email Mrs. Humphrey at lhumphrey@ladueschools.net to be included on a list of parents interested in taking a turn at being OBI sometime!
Spring Art Show/Open House

Creating a portal account will allow you to log in and view your child’s grades, attendance, and update your emergency contact information. As the district moves towards going “paperless” it will be very important to have access to Parent Portal in order to view your child’s report card.

Featuring 17 science projects by over 30 students at Old Bonhomme Elementary School, as well as activities and demonstrations by parents and outside organizations, such as shows of animals and plants, microscope and telescope viewing, flower chromatography, speed radar detection from Olivette Police Officer and “It is A BLAST” from Saint Louis Science Center. Please join us for celebrating our students’ achievement in Science Projects and for some hands-on science fun at Old Bonhomme Elementary School.

Positive Behavior Intervention Support (PBIS) is Soaring at OB

Did you know there is a connection between RtI and PBIS?
Old Bonhomme School has been working the last few years to create a system of academic and social- emotional supports linked directly to the assessed needs of our students. This system, known as Response to Intervention or RtI, provides all students with timely and targeted interventions based upon the results of universal screening tools in reading, math and behavior. In research, RtI is often shown as a pyramid. One side of the pyramid is academic and one side is social-emotional-behavioral. PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention and Support) is the researched based system that we use at Old Bonhomme for the social- emotional-behavioral side of the pyramid.
Universal screening helps school staff to determine which students may be academically or social- emotionally “at risk”. Academic screenings at Old Bonhomme include recent results of state and district tests like MAP and Discovery Education (DE) as well as specific academic screening tests like the Fountas and Pinnel Reading Assessment; these screening assessments are typically administered to all students two or three times per year. Students whose scores fall below a certain cut-off are identified as possibly needing more specialized interventions. The use of universal screenings refines and strengthens our efforts to help all of our students be successful by allowing us to take positive and preventative measures as early as possible.

What are the next steps in our learning?
We are always looking for more effective, research- based ways to support our children and their families and so this Spring, we are trying something new that we believe will help us to reach children whose behavior may impact their being successful in school in the future. For example, some children may have difficulty making friends, being overly shy, avoiding social situations, or not standing up for themselves (internalizing). Other children may have some minor problems following rules and may be acting-out in class or on school grounds (externalizing). Our goal is to find out which kids may need help and then provide them with assistance before minor challenges become bigger problems.

We are going to try using a universal screening tool highly recommended by the PBIS researchers called the Student Risk Screening Scale (SRSS-IE), which focuses on academic engagement behaviors of students, to see if the information it provides to our planning is helpful or suits our needs. The classroom teachers will complete the SRSS-IE for each child in their class. The results of the tool will be completely confidential and used only to consider students for mentoring, social skill building and other supports to help them engage positively in learning. The tool is available for review in the office if you are interested. As with our academic universal screenings, you would be notified if your student would be recommended for participation in an intervention program before it would begin. This first use is for our internal review process to see if it provides helpful information and will not be used to make any recommendations.
We are excited to continue the work of building a system of preventative, pro-active student supports that is linked directly to data. This will ensure that each of our students has the opportunity to receive the assistance they need to achieve academic and social- emotional success. OB's Got Character!
Our District Fill The Bus event was a huge success! Thank you to everyone who participated by sending in canned food donations. Ladue School District collected a whopping 9,274 cans! With Old Bonhomme contributing 500 of the cans. Ladue School District is truly the KIND of district that cares! We showed that together, we CAN make a difference! All can donations were delivered on Wednesday afternoon. A special thank you to Miss Marlow and the Fill The Bus Character Council sub-committee for gathering/counting cans all week, boxing and loading the donated cans onto the bus.
Just before the bus headed off to its donation destination, it was KINDly "wrapped in love" with a string of hearts, labeled by each student with a recent act of kindness.

Counselor Notes
Check out the OB Counseling Blog http://obschoolcounseling.blogspot.com/ to get information about different ways for OB Champions to Soar during Success Week (March 31-April 4). Students can bring in a picture of them being a champion to be displayed in the halls, support the Find-A- Bench campaign by donating to the cause, and participate throughout the week by dressing up. LEF Announcement
As you know the Ladue Education Foundation is busy funding special projects for students in all schools within the district. In addition to programs being considered through our traditional grant process the foundation is working to raise funds for two very specific initiatives.

TI-Navigator System
TI-Nspire CX "handhelds" are sophisticated graphing calculators that use math and science examples to help students make real- world connections to problems. The pilot for this program was funded by the LEF and was so successful, the district is hoping to expand the program so it is available to all math students. The calculators are enabled for wireless communication between teacher and student, providing an interactive learning

experience at a total cost for the system of approximately $26,000.
"The most powerful aspect of the TI-Nspire Navigator system is how it allows me to have a window into the minds of my students," said Barb Dwyer, the LHWHS mathematics teacher who is spearheading the Navigator program. "Every student has the device in their hand and has the ability to show what they are thinking, without worrying if they might have the wrong answer. Instead of evaluating only outcomes, I can instantly assess the learning process itself and adjust instruction accordingly."
Videoconferencing System
The Videoconferencing System costs approximately $90,000 and will allow the district to expose students to global learning experiences without leaving the classroom, making virtual field trips and collaborations with students in other countries possible. Speakers and industry experts can be "brought in" without the cost of time and travel. In addition, district staff members can participate in additional professional development opportunities, or substantially lower the cost of attending conferences in person.
"Both of these programs were brought to the LEF for consideration by our teaching staff, who are eager to identify and implement instructional resources that bring real-world application to our students," explains Superintendent Dr. Donna Jahnke. "Learning is no longer about simply memorizing a series of facts. It's about applying knowledge and helping our students truly understand how interdisciplinary thinking is essential to succeeding in post-secondary education, as well as in their future careers."

Birthday Treats
We know how much our students look forward to the birthday treats each month to celebrate all of our student’s birthdays in the classroom during their birthday month. Unfortunately, there were many families that did not turn in their $10 at the beginning of the school year, and the funds are running low for this special celebration. Any contributions to this fund can be turned in to the school office and would be greatly appreciated so we can continue this tradition for the remainder of the school year.
Self-Guided Motor Lab Tours
Next week you can check out the Motor Lab and walk through the stations before or after your Parent-Teacher Conference. The Motor Lab is located in room 206. Don't miss this opportunity to see how engaging both your body and brain make a big academic difference. Be looking for information about the Smart Moves book study in the PE section of the Quarterly Newsletter.
OB CHAMPIONS
We will be celebrating “Success Week,” formerly “Map Kickoff Week,” the week of March 31. Our theme this year is: “I am a champion, you’re going to see me SOAR!” We would like to have pictures of all of our students being a champion to display in the hallways. Please send in a picture of your child being a champion by March 28, to the attention of Mrs. Arnold. Some examples might be of them participating in a organization like girl scouts, a sport, playing an instrument, painting, volunteering, dancing, the possibilities are endless!

Your input is always appreciated, but sometimes finding time to pick up the phone or write a note is not always possible. Each year we use Survey Monkey, an on-line tool, to gather your input. Last year we only collected 27 responses. Your input is helpful and we’d love an even greater response this year!
The survey can be accessed from any computer since it is internet-based. If you would like to use our computers at school, you may stop by the Computer Lab when you are here for your Parent-Teacher Conferences next week.

SOAR Recognition
We had a great turn-out at our February SOAR Recognition Celebration on Tuesday, March 4. A total of 226 students chose to participate! Students really enjoyed meeting and getting to know a Chill hockey player, Shiver, their Polar Bear mascot, and Mr. Troop, spokesperson for the Chill hockey team, and our very own Nurse Comen's son! All participants were excited about receiving 4 tickets to a future Chill hockey game! March Eagle's Nest menus have been dispersed to classrooms. Ask you child about them! Our March SOAR Recognition Celebration will be based around showing kindness to others through a service project. The celebration will be 5 tickets. Details of the celebration will be announced when we return from Spring Break.
OB's Got Character
OB's character word of the month is KINDNESS. Thank you to those of you who have KINDly donated canned items this week. We will continue collecting cans until our Fill The Bus project comes to a close on Wednesday, March 12. We will be the last school the bus comes to before it heads to its final donation destination, so we wanted to send it off in an especially KIND way!! Students and staff will be recording a random act of kindness they have done, on a paper heart, and the hearts will be connected to form a large chain that we will wrap around the bus, to fill it with kindness, as it heads off.

PTO News
A huge thank you to Jodi Blucher and Betsy Kerner for coordinating the OB Scholastic Book Fair, and to Stacy Jurgiel for coordinating the Book Bucks program and making sure every student received a free book from the Book Fair. Also thank you to their amazing committee, who put in a lot of work to make the Book Fair a huge success again this year!
Another PTO thank you goes out to Jennifer Scissors for coordinating the Chess Club this year!
Thank you to Olga Cook and her copy committee for always making sure the teachers have the copies they need and that flyers for OBPTO events are sent home in your child’s backpack. They are in the school each and everyday making sure that the job is done right!
OB’s Got Character
Please mark your calendars for our
annual Fill The Bus event, sponsored by our District Character Education Committee. We will be collecting canned goods starting Monday, March 3, through Wednesday, March 12. And HEADS up: Caps For A Cause will take place on Friday, March 7. Students who bring a canned good to school on Friday, March 7, can wear a hat at school that day! We CAN do our part to make a difference!
Passport Night
We hope you can join us on Friday, March 7, for the Annual OB Passport Night from 6:30-8:30p.m. These are the countries that we have so far: USA, China, England, Finland, Germany, Greece, India, Japan, Korea, Russia, New Zealand, Spain, Zimbabwe and the Philippines. Passport Night is a great experience for the OB students and for all members of the community.
