Pin Your Pic- Students and staff are encouraged to bring in a photo from one of their summer adventures to be pinned on the bulletin board in the main hallway. Pins will be provided for you to pin it up yourself, or you can put it in the box on the table to be pinned later, or give the picture to your teacher to turn in for the pin board.
PTO NEWS- Thank you to everyone who attended the tennis fundraiser at Frontenac Racquet Club last weekend. This event raised $400 for Old Bonhomme!

ESOL Popsicles on the Playground- Shalom! Bonjour! Namaste! Hola! Ni Hao! Kon’nichiwa! Are you a family that speaks more than one language in your home? Principal Notes- Thanks to everyone who contributed to the Food Drive today. It is always great to see how our community lends a helping hand to those in need!
•We’re looking forward to the upcoming Curriculum Nights with parents. The event will start briefly in the gym with some general school information about our school goals, Positive Behavior Intervention Support and Olweus, our Bully Prevention Program. After that parents will meet with classroom teachers in their child’s classroom.

Please review the awesome items for sale, and follow the directions in the catalog for order information. Make sure to collect orders from family members and friends too!! If each OB student sells at least one item in the catalog, the OBPTO will meet our Innisbrook fundraising goal of $5,000! Plus students can earn great prizes for their sales.

BOXTOPS- This year the Art Studio will continue to collect Boxtops. Boxtops are a great way to earn a little extra cash for our school. Each Boxtop is worth 10 cents and they add up fast! The Art Studio is offering a crayon eraser to any student that collects 25 boxtops. There are collection sheets outside the Art Studio to help you count or you can simply put the 25 boxtops in a baggie with your name and class on the bag. Bring your collections to the Art Studio and Mrs. Roth will give you the crayon shaped eraser. Thank you for supporting the art program, arts integration, and special assemblies at Old Bonhomme through the Boxtops program!

Principal Notes- There are so many people to thank for a wonderful start to our school year!Let’s start with our staff and students who have been so enthusiastic and energized that it’s impossible to imagine a better climate for learning! Our families helped with everything from our PTO BBQ at the park and first morning coffee, to carefully following our arrival and dismissal procedures. Thanks to the district office for help on renovating the school grounds out front and coming around to offer help on our first morning with our kindergartners and first day drop off at the front of the building. There is a slogan used at the high school that certainly fits my mood this week, “Let’s ‘Due this!”
Old Bonhomme Rodeo- Have you heard about the Big Ol' Rodeo that happened here at O.B. over the past two days?! It was a school-wide event, involving the students, classroom teachers, and specialists. The purpose was to give the students an opportunity to learn and practice expected procedures throughout the school, such as in the hallway and cafeteria. They also learned and practiced safe and fun ways to play at recess. This came about through a cooperative effort among PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports), Olweus Bully Prevention, and the P.E. department. Be sure to ask your little wrangler about it!

PTO NEWS- A huge thank you to Steven Player and the rest of the OB Dad's Club for the amazing food at the Back to School BBQ! This dedicated group of volunteers spent the day preparing our delicious dinner - THANK YOU! Thank you to everyone who signed up for an OBPTO committee or Room Parent assignment. We appreciate all of the time that each of you give to make OB the special place that it is! Your OBPTO Board is available to answer any questions you have, address concerns, and work together for the benefit of our students. Recess and Lunch- One of the goals for the summer was to take a hard look at our schedules and routines for recess and lunch to see if we could make some improvement. We are very excited about the changes based on the positive impact we saw the first three days of school. Although we have decreased staff available at recess we have increased the staff supervising at recess thanks to our special area teachers who are helping out. This gives more adults doing active supervision on our large field, and more support for students as we implement Olweus, our new bully prevention program. The district has established the 20 minutes for recess and lunch so that is not something we can adjust, although a 5 minute time in between is built in for hand-washing. We started by analyzing the amount of time teachers and students spend taking lunch count with 7 lunch choices (Hot entrées A, B, salad bar, sack lunch, milk only, home lunch); distributing lunch cards after recess; and reminding students of their lunch choice. Also the frustration it created when the lunch count didn’t match the actual food distributed and students were left with a non-preferred option. We also wanted to try to honor the request of our students to make choices about which friends they sit with and more time to eat (less time waiting). This year we now have only 4 choices (Hot entrée, sack lunch, milk only, home lunch.) Students enter the cafeteria in classroom line order, which makes it very simple to distribute lunch cards after hand-washing. At the table, the students will sit in their line number order this first month so they can practice learning the cafeteria routines. Our October 1st goal is that students will have demonstrated their understanding of the routine, had classroom lessons (Character Ed, Counselor, etc.) on how to include everyone, and we’ll move to free seating at their classroom lunch tables. These changes have already saved us time and as the process becomes routine, students will have more time to actually enjoy lunch. Going from a leisurely summer lunch to a set lunch period is a difficult transition for students and staff so at the beginning it will feel very short to the students as they adjust. One strategy to help from home is to try packing a simple balanced lunch that your child is comfortable eating in 20 minutes. Too many choices might leave your child choosing only the special treat, chips and 1 bite of the more nutritious parts you’ve packed. Try it out on a weekend to check portion sizes and the number of items. Remember they have played outside at recess and had a full morning of learning so they are hungry, but also want to talk with classmates while they eat. You are welcome to join your child for lunch at anytime, but it would be helpful to give us a week or two of practice before you come.

Important Message from the OB Art Studio!- The Art Studio could use your old ribbon and yarns. Mrs. Roth could also use a few parents who might like to cut fabric into strips. No need to be perfect, so measuring is not needed. Just a lot of cutting.
