Announcements:
Safety Information
Each year we practice intruder drills along with tornado and fire drills. This year as part of new state law the Olivette police will be observing too. Our first drill is scheduled for this coming Tuesday. To read the actual "script" for the drill you can check out the posting on my blog at http://obeprincipalblog.blogspot.com/.
Last week, we did make an announcement to lock classroom doors, although at no time were any students in danger. Since locking doors is one component of an intruder lock-down some teachers chose to be extra safe and moved into a full lock-down until they gathered more information. The request to lock doors is made for a variety of reasons but usually it is to provide for the privacy of an adult or child, or limit classroom interruptions. At our weekly staff meeting we debriefed the situation and reviewed the specific language that will be used for different situations to prevent a greater than necessary response in the future.

Cafeteria News
We're happy to report some positive updates! With fewer choices student wait time to pick up a cafeteria lunch has dramatically decreased from last year. The amount of fruit and vegetables being eaten has dramatically increased and there is noticeable enthusiasm for the choices. Who would have guessed that peaches or broccoli with ranch dressing would be such a hit! Of course some students take the minimum which is one of something from the fruit and vegetable bar, but when there is a favorite available the plates are piled high.
Students have made new friends from their class as they sat in their assigned seats, but are also ready to change the seating. We've taken random timings for all the grade levels and every student is getting to the cafeteria on time and has at least 15 minutes to eat and it is usually about 17 minutes. Observing empty trays and sandwich bags is usually good judge of enough time and we’re seeing plenty of those. We know that no system is perfect and there are always exceptional days where there is a glitch even with the best made plans. If you have a question about your child’s lunch, please contact the office and we can make some observations to share with you or you are welcome to check it out yourself.
It looks like several grade levels are on track to meet our Oct. 1st goal to move to free seating at their classroom tables. Teachers will begin teaching and practicing with students on how to make their seating choice quickly without leaving anyone out. We don't want to lose any of that valuable eating time to decisions about where to sit!
