Veteran's Day
This year Old Bonhomme Elementary wants to collaborate with you to create a tribute for our Veterans. We want you to create a slide with the name of the person you know who served in the military, what branch they served in, the student's name they are related to, how they are related, and a picture of the person who served. Click here to see what we have so far and add your information to a new slide. If you don't know how to create a slide, send the information to harnold@ladueschools.net and we will submit the slide for you. Ms. Ladue has been working with the show choir on a special song to go along with our slide show. We will plan on sending out the final product on or before Veteran's day. Be sure to wear red, white, and blue on November 11 and help celebrate our Veterans!
OB's Got Character
Be sure to ask your child(ren) to share with you all about OB's first Class Buddy Time! The focus of the lesson was on SMILING. Students met/ mingled with fellow students in their buddy class(es) to learn about the origin of the smiley face and be introduced to/practice Choosing To Be Nice by smiling when they meet/greet and see others. Please consider clicking on the link to view the video shared during Buddy Time. After viewing the video students interacted with a Mix, Freeze & Pair/Share activity, then gathered as a large group to share what they learned. Ask us to share with you something we learned! Music playing over the speaker (Louis Armstrong - When You're Smiling) signaled it was time to line up and head back to
class. Smiling and waving silently while passing others in the hallway was highly encouraged :) Ask us to demonstrate a smile while also silently waving! Students were also given a special smiley face clay art piece to serve as a reminder to spread kindness by smiling. Please consider finding a special place to display the smiley face to serve as a reminder at home to smile and spread kindness! The smiley clay pieces were kindly created by 2K, 3A, 3K and 3P during their art classes with Mrs. Roth. We are looking forward to our next Class Buddy Time in November.

Community Survey Begins October 23
Survey to measure the community’s overall satisfaction with the district
and level of support for a potential high school renovation project.

Beginning on October 23, 2015, a comprehensive telephone survey will begin with the purpose of determining Ladue School District residents’ satisfaction with the district, as well as their thoughts about, and support for, a potential high school renovation. The calls will be placed from 7 -‐ 9 p.m. on weekday nights and from noon to 6 p.m. on Saturdays. They are anticipated to take less than 15 minutes to complete.
Patron Insight, Inc., a Kansas City-‐based market research organization, has performed the last two community surveys done by the Ladue School District and has worked with school districts across the Midwest on similar research since 1992. Calls will be placed from Kansas City, Missouri (area code 816) and Kansas City, Kansas (area code 913) to both landlines and cell phones. (Caller ID may display “Market Research Associates.”) Calling will continue until 600 calls reWlecting a representative cross-‐ section of the community have been completed.
“We conduct these surveys every few years,” explains Superintendent Dr. Donna Jahnke. “They provide us with incredibly valuable information about how our community perceives our performance, where they get information about our district, and how they feel about speciWic issues. This time we will speciWically be asking our residents about their thoughts about a potential high school renovation. We have been researching this initiative and sharing information with our community on this topic for almost two years now. We look forward to learning how they feel about it.”
Information about the district’s perceived performance will be compared against data gathered in previous surveys to see what areas have improved, and which may need additional effort. In addition, the information gathered about the high school renovation initiative will be used by the Ladue Schools Board of Education to assist in determining whether to move forward with a bond referendum request for a high school renovation on the April 5,
2016 ballot. Information about this initiative can be found at www.ladueschools.net/highschoolrenovation
Participants for the telephone survey will be selected totally at random, and all responses will be kept completely conWidential. If called, residents are encouraged to candidly share their thoughts.
Residents who are not called to complete the phone survey,
can also share their thoughts by answering the same questions online.

The online survey will be available from October 23 to November 13, 2015. “The data gathered from the online survey will not provide statistically valid results in the way the telephone survey does,” explains the district’s communication director, Susan Downing. “However, it does provide us with valuable information and will also be reviewed by the Board of Education and administration.”

Mrs. K’s News to Share
The OBPTO event on Saturday night was followed by a visit on Sunday by a group of former Old Bonhomme students and teachers.
This group of former kindergarten and first grade classmates and their teachers gather regularly and requested a tour of the school. I met them here on Sunday and was surprised to find almost 30 people from as far away as New York and California! They even sang an Old Bonhomme school song :)
On Tuesday this week, I joined 2 classrooms as a student. Our Superintendent, Dr. Jahnke, challenged building administrators to “be a student for the day!” I spent the morning as a student in 4P and the afternoon with 1S. I’m still gathering my thoughts about the experience but a few things stood out right away. Read my blog to learn more! You’ll soon find pictures and more information about both experiences on my blog http://obeprincipalblog.blogspot.com/
CONGRATULATIONS!
We were informed this week that Old Bonhomme Elementary School has been selected as the recipient of the Gysbers Success Designation Award. This award is in recognition for commitment to fully implementing a comprehensive guidance and counseling program focusing on the academic, career and personal/social development of all students. Full implementation signifies that the program incorporates a results-based approach in the evaluation of its program using relevant student data to demonstrate the impact of guidance interventions on student outcomes. There is a growing body of evidence that more fully implemented comprehensive guidance and counseling programs make a value added contribution to student achievement and other positive student outcomes.
Mrs. Arnold, our school counselor, works extremely hard to deliver our comprehensive guidance and counseling program but she is always quick to point out that it takes a team. Her success is achieved with the collaboration and support of the staff, parents and students. Our entire staff and community can be proud of the work being done by the school counselor and staff at Old Bonhomme. Congratulations, Mrs. Arnold, and thank you for your leadership and hard work!

Counselor Notes
Begin with the End in Mind
This week your children learned about Habit 2 of the Seven Habits of Happy Kids Begin with the End in Mind. Having a plan is an important part of being successful. In addition to reviewing the material sent home this week after your child's counseling lesson, make sure you visit obschoolcounseling.blogspot.com. Click on the Individual Student Planning link to find more tools to help you and your child plan for their future. The Parent Guide to Student Appraisal is a great resource for you to have a better understanding of the assessment tools we use at OB. Your child will enjoy playing the College and Career Readiness games featured at the bottom of the Individual Student Planning page.
OBPTO Rock n’Bowl for Bonhomme
Thank you to the OBPTO for a wonderful event last Saturday night! It was a great evening for parents and staff to mingle and enjoy some laughs together. Best of all it was for a good cause, supporting activities and purchases that make Old Bonhomme special. Like our Fine Arts Field Trips, technology, and benches for our upper blacktop! It was a great way to get over the Cardinal’s loss that night also.
LEF Breakfast & ‘Due Run
The Ladue Education Foundation's Annual Community Breakfast and 'Due Run 4 Education was a whopping success, raising more than $45,000 for outstanding educational programs for our kids.
We are truly grateful to our community for the enthusiasm and energy they brought to both events! The Breakfast was a full house, and the 'Due Run's participants doubled in number this year.
At the 'Due Run, more than 340 people began a gorgeous Homecoming day with a 5K or 1-Mile run starting from Ladue Horton Watkins High School. Adults, kids and teams, brought their running shoes and can-do attitude to this fun family event.
Guests at the Breakfast enjoyed learning from Dr. Jahnke about the latest initiatives in the District, as well as hearing from current students and alumni. Pulitzer Prize-winner Ben
Solomon charmed everyone with his appreciation for teachers, and Carol Weisman kept the crowd laughing with her hilarious take on growing up in the Ladue schools, and why it's so important to support our District. Thanks to everyone for the generous support you gave in dollars and time! For more information about upcoming events and to learn how you can get involved in the exciting work the LEF is doing on behalf of our children, see www.laduefoundation.org.
Red Ribbon Week-Students Cast your Vote!
We will be celebrating Red Ribbon Week October 26-30. Each Fall, schools and community organizations across the United States use this week to focus on turning young people away from making weak choices. Red Ribbon Week is a time to promote strong choices, good character, and a healthy lifestyle for children of all ages. This is a good time, for you to talk with your children about drugs, safety and being the best they can be.
This year students get to vote on one of our Red Ribbon Week dress up days. Have your child click here to cast his or her vote. Check next weeks newsletter for a full list of theme days.
OB's Got Character
Last Monday we began reciting the Choose To Be Nice (CTBN) Promise during morning announcements. We will continue to recite the CTBN Promise each Monday during morning announcements throughout the school year. Please consider practicing it at home, and maybe even making it a part of your home routine one night of the week.
"I promise to help spread kindness wherever and whenever possible. And to the very best of my ability, I'll be nice to those with whom I come into contact on a daily basis."
Lost and Found
With the weather changing, please be sure you have labeled all jackets with your child’s name so lost items can easily be returned to them.

Auction Update
We indadvertedly left off a name of one of the very helpful auction committee members, Anna Molina. Without her we would not have had so many wonderful online auction items.
The online auction has been extended to Friday at 9:00 pm!
You must register at
http://rocknbowlforbonhomme.eflea.ca/ in order to place bids.
This is your only opportunity to bid on class art projects and individual teacher experiences as well as a vacation home, sporting events, local goodies and so much more. Do not miss out!!!! These items will not be available at the event! Sponsored by the OBPTO
Any questions, email Sarah Glasser at
smteal@yahoo.com
Please Join the Diversity Committee!
The Diversity Committee will be having their first meeting on Wednesday, October 14 at 5:30p.m. in the conference room at Old Bonhomme. All are welcome, come share your thoughts and ideas to help make our school a better place!
Lunch at OB
We are always happy to have parents join us for lunch! At the beginning of the year, when students have assigned seats and are learning the cafeteria routines, you and your student will sit at a private table so it doesn’t upset the routine for others sitting where assigned. If you want, the student you are joining may invite up to two additional students. More than two makes others feel left out. At this point in the year, several grade levels (second-fourth) have earned the privilege of free seating at their classroom table so you may join your child anywhere at their classroom table and there should be plenty of room for everyone.
After lunch, please say good-bye and the student will walk back with his or her class and teacher. At that time, please remember to sign out in the office.
Parent Volunteers Needed
Dear Parents,
We are looking for a few parent volunteers who can help with a SOAR event on October 16 from 12:50-3:10 p.m. You would help run some carnival games and supervise students as they enjoy the carnival.
Please let Stephanie Chapie know if you are available to help,
schapie@ladueschools.net. We really appreciate your assistance in making our first SOAR event of the year a success!
Picture Retakes
Picture Retake day will be on Thursday, October 15. If your child was absent on picture day, please make sure you fill out a picture order form, which are available in the office, or go to mylifetouch.com and use Picture Day ID: JO015099Y1. If your child is having their picture retaken they must return the original picture package to the photographer on picture day.
Square One Art
Look for a custom catalog that displays your child’s artwork coming home soon!

Innisbrook Thank You
Thanks to everyone who supported the OBPTO Innisbrook Fundraiser! Every purchase helped, and we are appreciative of everyone’s time, effort and dollars to support the OBPTO and the great programs/events we are able to provide to our OB community as a result. We exceeded our sales from last year, and products will be delivered to the school for pick-up in mid-October. Once we know the delivery schedule, we’ll announce the specific times/ dates for pick-up. If you feel like you missed out, you can still order online at www.innisbrook.com/user/126181. Questions? Cindy Follman, follcm@charter.net or Jamie Cacciabando, jsallier14@hotmail.com.

After-School Enrichment Classes
It was a great first week of After-School Classes, and we hope your children had as much fun as the teachers did! Just a quick reminder to all the parents that students must be picked up from the classroom by 4:55. Please be respectful of our parent volunteers and be on time. Any children not picked up will be taken to BASK and the parent charged accordingly for the late pick-up. If the problem continues your child may be removed from the After-School Class. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding.
Nominate your Teacher or Principal & win a
visit from Rampage & Cheerleaders
Elementary students can win a Rams Pride visit on a Friday before a Sunday game by writing a short note about the unique qualities of their favorite educator. Learn more about the program and apply by clicking here.
As the webpage will explain, the Rams will visit one (1) elementary school the Friday before each home game, with the exception of our Thursday Night Football game. The concept is to award an outstanding teacher and/or administrator with a visit from Rampage and Rams cheerleaders. The visits are a blast for the kids and usually last about 30-45 minutes.
